When anglers arrive in northern Utah each summer, the best camping sites near Flaming Gorge fill fast. Camping on the Green River during peak trout season means positioning yourself close to some of America’s most productive fishing water—and Dutch John Resort puts you right there.

Why This Stretch of the Green River Matters

The Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is legendary among fly fishermen. Cold water released from the dam creates ideal conditions for rainbow and brown trout throughout the summer months. Unlike campgrounds near Green River State Park or the distant Colorado River, Dutch John Resort sits minutes from Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area and the prime fishing access anglers seek.

Our location near the Gorge Reservoir means you can fish early, return to camp, and get back on the water without wasting your day driving.

The Booking Strategy That Works

Memorial Day weekend through summer are our busiest camping seasons. Sites book up in advance, especially for weekend arrivals. If you’re planning a fishing trip during peak trout season, don’t wait.

Our interactive resort map lets you select your exact site at no extra charge—whether you need a 50 amp RV site, a tent site with a fire pit and picnic table, or our group camping area for larger gatherings.

Understanding Your Site Options

What to Know Before You Arrive

Book your site in advance. Use our online reservation system to secure your preferred spot. Check-in and arrival procedures will be provided when you book.

Plan for variable weather. Even during summer, nights can cool down. If you’re tent camping, bring appropriate gear for comfortable sleep.

Bring your fishing license. Peak trout season means competitive water. The earlier you can get to your favorite runs, the better your chances.

Beyond Fishing: Recreation and Nearby Attractions

While the Green River fishing draws most visitors, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area offers hiking trails, water recreation on the Gorge Reservoir, and scenic exploration. The visitor center provides area information and campground maps for planning day trips.

Boat ramp access is available nearby for those bringing watercraft. The park also connects to national forest areas and the River Trail for those who want to explore beyond the campground.

Why Dutch John Resort Works for Anglers

For a completely different view of the Green River, stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) offer a unique way to experience the crystal-clear waters below Flaming Gorge Dam. These tools provide the option to stand for panoramic views or sit down and paddle—or simply let the river currents pull you along at a leisurely pace.

SUPs work best for calm water sections and experienced balance-conscious paddlers. They’re not recommended for Class II rapids but excel in the peaceful stretches where you can spot fish in the gin-clear water and enjoy unobstructed views of Red Canyon’s stunning walls. Many paddlers alternate between standing and sitting throughout their journey, adapting to water conditions and energy levels.

Spring and Fall: The Angler’s Secret

While summer brings the crowds, spring and fall offer excellent camping weather with fewer people competing for sites and water. If your schedule allows flexibility, consider these shoulder seasons for a more intimate camping experience at our park.
