The Green River: A Fly Fishing Haven

The Green River is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and abundant trout populations. Flowing through the picturesque Ashley National Forest, this tailwater fishery is divided into three distinct sections, each offering unique fishing experiences:

**Section A**:

Just below Flaming Gorge Dam, this stretch is ideal for streamer fishing. Regardless of flow, streamers consistently produce results. Our guides have reported success using #20 PMDs, caddis, and Yellow Sally dries and nymphs.

**Section B**:

Known for its untouched natural beauty, Section B offers excellent dry fly fishing opportunities. Terrestrial insects thrive here, making it a haven for trout. Dry flies in sizes 12-22, such as the Adams, Elk Caddis, Stimulator (black), and Parachute Adams, work wonders.

**Section C**:

The lower section of the Green River is perfect for streamer fishing. Trophy-size trout await, and the river’s gin-clear waters provide an exhilarating experience.

Current Water Flows and Conditions

Understanding the water flows from Flaming Gorge Dam is crucial for a successful fishing trip. As of now, the water flows are at 1721-1803 cubic feet per second (cfs)** These flow rates significantly influence fishing conditions, affecting water clarity, insect activity, and fish behavior.

Essential Fly Patterns

Our local guides recommend the following fly patterns to maximize your success on the Green River:

**Mayflies**:

Look for hatches of Blue-winged Olives (BWOs) and Pale Morning Duns (PMDs). Use BWO nymphs and emergers in sizes 18-22 during hatches. PMD patterns like Parachute Adams and Sparkle Duns work well.

**Caddis flies**:

Elk Hair Caddis and X-Caddis imitations are effective. Sizes 14-18 are ideal

**Stone flies**:

Golden Stonefly nymphs and adult patterns are productive. Sizes 8-12 work best.

**Midges**:

Zebra Midges and Griffith’s Gnats in sizes 18-24 are reliable choices.
