MATCH THE HATCH & MORE…

Fishing techniques on the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam can vary depending on the specific insect hatch.

Here are some effective techniques for the key hatches:

### Midges

**Techniques**:

Nymphing is highly effective. Use a double nymph rig with a Zebra Midge as the dropper fly. Dry fly fishing can also be productive during midge hatches, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.

**Patterns**:

Zebra Midge (#18-22), Griffith’s Gnat (#20-24).

### Blue-Winged Olives (BWOs)

*Techniques**:

Dry fly fishing is excellent during BWO hatches. Look for rising fish in slower water and back eddies. Nymphing with BWO nymphs can also be productive before the hatch.

**Patterns**:

BWO Emerger (#18-20), Parachute Adams (#18-20).

### Caddisflies

**Techniques**:

Swinging wet flies or skating dry flies can be very effective. In the evening, try using caddis dry flies near the banks and riffles.

**Patterns**:

Elk Hair Caddis (#18-22), LaFontaine’s Sparkle Pupa (#14-16).

### Pale Morning Duns (PMDs)

**Techniques**:

**Patterns**:

PMD Nymph (#16-18), PMD Sparkle Dun (#16-18).

### Stoneflies

**Techniques**:

Nymphing with large stonefly nymphs is very effective. During the hatch, try using large dry flies near the banks and in fast water.

Golden Stonefly Nymph (#6-10),

Stimulator (#6-10).

Tricos (#20-22)

Cicadas (SPRING & SUMMER 20-2025) Chris’s Chernobyl (#6-10), Fat Albert (#6-10)

General  Green River Fly Fishing Tips

**Nymphing**:

Use a strike indicator and adjust the depth to keep your nymphs near the bottom. A double nymph rig with a heavier fly on top and a smaller fly on the bottom can be very effective.

**Green River Dry Fly Fishing**:

Match the hatch by observing the insects on the water and selecting a fly that closely resembles them. Present your fly with a drag-free drift.

**Effective Green River Streamers**:

When hatches are sparse, fishing with streamers can be productive. Use a sink-tip line to get your fly down to the fish.

These techniques should help you make the most of the diverse hatches on the Green River.
