Rafting & Whitewater Conditions — Green River Below Dutch John
Current flows below Flaming Gorge Dam are providing excellent floating conditions on the Green River, with gentle whitewater, clear tailwater flows, and safe navigation across all major sections. These conditions are ideal for scenic rafting, guided floats, and anglers drifting between fishing runs.
Below is the current breakdown of rafting difficulty and river character across Sections A, B, and C.
Section A — Dam to Little Hole
-
Difficulty: Class I–II
-
River Character: Gentle gradient, clear water, mild riffles
Notes:
This stretch is ideal for scenic floats and fly fishing trips. The river is forgiving at current flows, making it a great option for beginner rowers and guided fishing rafts. Calm water and light riffles create a relaxing float with excellent trout habitat along the banks.
Section B — Little Hole to Indian Crossing
-
Difficulty: Class I–II+
-
River Character: Slightly steeper gradient with more structure and occasional splashy waves
Notes:
Still beginner-friendly, this section offers slightly more technical rowing, especially during windy conditions or low-light navigation. Anglers often prefer this stretch for its combination of productive trout water and a bit more movement through riffles and shelves.
Section C — Indian Crossing to Swallow Canyon
-
Difficulty: Class I–II
-
River Character: Wider channel, slower flows, and braided sections
Notes:
This stretch offers a relaxed floating experience with easy navigation at current flows. Boaters may encounter occasional shallow bars, but the wider river allows for straightforward route selection. It’s a great section for long scenic floats and wildlife viewing.
