This Week on the Green

The Green River is running a double-peak release this week, roughly 1,800 CFS on average with cold, clear tailwater and a busy late summer hatch. Morning Tricos, midday terrestrials, and evening caddis are all in play for anglers who can read the seams.

Below is the current dam release status, water temperature and clarity, hatch timing, our recommended fly box, and a full tactical breakdown of Sections A, B, and C. With flows surging midday and precise presentations required, a guided drift boat is the most productive way to reach the active feeding zones.

Current Dam Release Status

Dam Discharge
~1,826 CFS with daily fluctuations driven by power-generation cycles.
Reservoir Elevation
6,011.90 to 6,012.13 ft
Operational Pattern
Double-peak release schedule continues, producing midday surges and technical fishing conditions.
Outlook
Expect 1,700 to 1,900 CFS daily averages with predictable morning lows and noon and afternoon rises. The tailwater stays cold, clear, and ideal for trout activity.

Water Temperature, Clarity and River Conditions

Green River Below Dam
61.3°F, an ideal temperature for active trout feeding.
  • Strong morning dry fly windows with Tricos and midges
  • Excellent midday terrestrial action
  • Evening caddis remains productive

River Behavior
  • Double-peak flows create unsettled fish and require precise presentations
  • Inside seams and soft edges outperform heavy mid-river current
  • Dutch John Resort fly fishing guides maneuver drift boats into the correct seams and eddies for excellent access to all active feeding zones
  • Afternoon winds may assist terrestrial drift

Section A Dam to Little Hole

Dam to Little Hole

Clear water and slow eddies reward a stealthy, long-leader approach.
Techniques
  • Sight-fishing Trico pods in slow back eddies, morning
  • Nymph the seams during flow spikes
  • Terrestrial plop and drift tight to grassy banks, midday
  • Long leaders, 6X to 7X, required in clear water
Dry Flies
  • Trico Spinner #24

  • Bionic Hopper #12
  • Ants #16–20
  • Beetles #14–18
Guide note. The morning Trico window is excellent, and the best fishing comes when flows are down.
Section B Little Hole to Browns Park

Little Hole to Browns Park

Midday surges push fish deep, so get down in the slots and work the banks.
Techniques
  • Deep nymphing in the slots during midday surges
  • Dry-dropper rigs, Chubby plus PMD emerger
  • Terrestrials inches from the bank, drifting along seams and eddies
